To me irrigation itself is good for health (living environment) but unsustainable irrigation system or SPIS resulted into standing water, water pond and marshes which in turn remain breading ground for pathogens that result into 4 types of diseases i.e. 1 water born 2 water wash 3 water based and 4 water related .

The SPIS takes into account the crop water requirement. Based on the crop water requirement and some water losses into the irrigation grid the piping is dimensioned. If done well, there shouldn't be excess water standing on soil. In any case, if it happens to have standing water, it would be wise to set up a drainage system towards surface or underground water.

I agree Tanoh. In case the irrigation grid are not lined and water is leaking persistently, it may cause water logging and salinity and thus desertification. This is true for riparian agriculture. The statistic determined by UNO is alarming: search it further

if properly organized, no ponding will occur. I suggest that you have a farmer or worker walking around and observing during irrigation just to check whats happening. in case it did you can create a ditch or divert excess water to another place or storage.

Irrigation system should be sized and irrigation schedule and timing should be paced in a way that meets the water requirement of the crop. this will reduce cases of over and under irrigation. Regular inspection and maintenance should be conducted to ensure that the system works efficiently and provide the right quantity of water to the field.

Excessive irrigation of plants can affect the water quality of natural environments by causing erosion, transporting nutrients pesticides and herbicides, or decreasing the amount of water that flows naturally into streams and rivers; therefore, SPIS system should be carefully designed and sized to avodi such issues.
