Hi,
Great automated tool to know and FAO tools collection website, thanks SPIS team for letting us know. Just a small enquiry to understand the tool better are,
1. Water requirement data is collected on yearly basis i.e. total water requirement/year which is good for SPIS design but how we cover lean/dry period?
2. Do we have a tool to project water need? There are crop info separate sheet but this info could be changed due to uncertain precipitation or climate variability?

Dear Rashid,

1. In the Water Requirement Tool, crop water requirements are calculated for each selected crop and for each month (in mm/month). They are shown in the graph on the bottom part of the sheet (Water Requirement Sheet).
2. In addition, the tool gives you as well the gross irrigation needs (considering irrigation method efficiency). They are also shown in the graph and in the table above, for each month (as a daily average in m3/day), for a period of 2 years. Irrigation needs already take into consideration the dry and rainy seasons as the amount of rain for each month is considered in the calculations.
3. Concerning crop information, the provided values are indicative values for certain regions and periods of the year. If you have values for a specific crop in your region you can just add them to the table or just modify the existing values (Crop Information Sheet). The modified values will then be used in the calculations of crop water requirements and irrigation needs.

Dear Rashid,

I would advise you to use HomerPro software to project the water requirement for the whole year, the software takes into account the SPIS design, precipitation, climate conditions and all the parameters. HomerPro software gives you very accurate data as on which day there will be shortage of water due to low radition and on which day there will be surplus water. However, it is very important to know how HmoerPro softawre can be configured for SPIS systems which I suggest you find that in their website.
