DC and AC Pumps

I am having a problem understanding the DC and AC issues. Which is better to use? Or when do we use each?

For small scare irrigation it is better to use DC than using AC but for large scale irrigation AC is more preferred (efficient). This mean that the choice will depend on the size of land that you would like to irrigate (here remember that the more you irrigate the big size of land, the more you will need much power "energy").

This is like a further question. I am really interested to know whether any AC pump can be converted to use solar power. I have been receiving offers to convert especially the older version - 8 years or older borehole pumps to use solar power. I am a bit shy to take up the opportunities lest the pumps fail to respond to the available VFD controllers .. any idea..?

The optimum choice of the pump (AC or DC) depends on the size of the system. DC pump is usually more suitable for small systems while AC pumps is prefered for large systems. Below are some comparisions between the two besd on efficiency, noise, cost and service life:
1. Efficiency:
A DC solar pump is more efficient as it gives maximum output with fewer solar panels. AC solar pumps need more solar panels as the electricity has to be converted into AC for utilization. As a result, the efficiency of the system is reduced in the latter's case.
2. Noise:
DC pumps are quite silent because of the BLDC motor technology used in their engineering. It helps to reduce mechanical noise significantly. On the other hand, AC solar pumps are rather obsolete and use the old motor technology. It might also cause it to become noisy over time.
3. Cost:
A DC solar pump is difficult to maintain. It requires specialized personnel to service it. This scope of limited service and complicated engineering causes a significant increase in its cost. AC solar pumps can be easily handled in case of emergencies.
4. Service life:
DC solar pumps have motors with copper coils in them. Copper is seen to be more durable, thereby increasing the life of the pumping system. AC solar pumps, on the other hand, have solar motor coils made up of aluminum, making them prone to deterioration. Consequently, they require service more often as compared to DC pumps.

DC pumps are more efficient than AC pumps. For the SPIS, it is more practical to use DC pumps since the source of our power is DC from PV modules and saves the money required to acquire an inverter for AC pumps. However, DC pumps are limited to small systems.
